HOW TO STEP INTO THE KINGDOM AND LIVE THERE

A preeminent philosopher, brilliant thinker, and beloved teacher, Dallas Willard (1935-2013) has left a profound legacy on American Christianity. Willard is known for his lectures and writings on spiritual formation, which elucidate an integrated understanding of the gospel and the kingdom of God for the whole person, in all of life. The clarity of his writings, deep engagement with ideas, and genuine friendships both in academia and the church have had far-reaching impact.

Dallas Willard served as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California for almost five decades. His philosophical publications are mainly in the areas of epistemology, the philosophy of the mind, and the philosophy of Edmund Husserl, including extensive translations of Husserl’s writings from German to English. In addition to his philosophical scholarship, Willard grappled deeply with how to apply reason and logic to the understanding - and more importantly, the practice of Christian spiritual principles. He wrote The Spirit of the Disciplines in 1988, The Divine Conspiracy in 1998 (selected as Christianity Today’s “Book of the Year” for 1999), and Renovation of the Heart in 2002 (winning Christianity Today's 2003 Book Award in the category of Spirituality), among other Christian publications.

How to Step into the Kingdom and Live There was taken from Willard’s last public lecture series Living in Christ’s Presence: Final Words on Heaven and the Kingdom of God (part three of seven talks). It was recorded at the Knowing Christ Conference in February 2013 at the Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation, part of the Martin Institute for Christianity and Culture at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. The passion for the conference was to provide an overview of the heart of Willard’s writings: that it is possible to know the Trinity intimately and step into God’s glorious kingdom now! In this seven hour lecture series Willard reflects on the state of the university, the meaning of knowledge, the importance of the spiritual disciplines, and what it looks like to live well in light of God’s kingdom. Moderated by pastor and teacher John Ortberg, the talks share a conversational tone made poignant by the fact that Willard knew the end of his life was near. He passed away just a few months later.
