Leonid Smetannikov is one of Russia’s leading lyric baritones, having been awarded the prestigious title People’s Artist of Russia. He is currently a professor at the Saratov Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet. Mr. Smetannikov is a proponent of Russian folk songs, always an integral part of his recital repertoire. His operatic performances of Tchaikovsky ’s "Eugene Onegin," "Queen of Spades" and "Pique Dame" have received critical acclaim. He is Laureate of the All-Russian Concours of Vocalists, Russia’s highest award for singers, and is a recording artist. Mr. Smetannikov's touring schedules have taken him to all the Russian opera houses, as well as, in recital, to Germany, Australia, France, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Finland and Japan.
Pianist Lina Baranov graduated from the famed Gnessin Music Institute in Moscow, where she studied with the eminent Russian teacher Jacob Milstein. After graduation, she joined the faculty of Moscow’s internationally acclaimed Tchaikovsky Conservatory. She emigrated from the Soviet Union in 1978. She tours in the US and Europe with Mr. Smetannikov, and as a member of Trio West. In 1992, Mrs. Baranov was in residence at the Festival Bahnhof Rolandseck in Bonn with Trio West and other LA Philharmonic musicians. She has been a soloist with various local orchestras.
